Jim’s
sculpting career began in the 1980’s while he was living north of
the Arctic Circle in Alaska.
The
Eskimo village had several noted ivory/whale bone carvers and
carving seemed to be the perfect endeavor to fill the below zero
nights. After returning to the world, his sculpting was directed
towards western art using cedar fence posts as his base material.
His work gradually became more refined and began to include the more
traditional limestone, alabaster, soapstone and many varieties of
wood. Quite a few of his sculptures have been cast into bronze.
Jim’s
work has been shown in many art centers, galleries and museums in
Jackson Hole, Santa Fe, Scottsdale, Aspen and Telluride. Currently,
he exhibits in Minnesota and Texas.
Jim
Burton has been a resident of Texas since 1994, but spends his
summers at this studio in Wisconsin.
