Hailing
from North Plainfield, NJ, Stevie was one of 8 children. Her work
began when she was very
young.
When she created a drawing to give to her father, he asked her to
sign it, as all artists must sign their works. For her, that was
permission to follow her dream. Her love of the artistic process
brought her to the prestigious University of Texas Art Department.
Stevie took on the entire idea of art; she enjoyed studio drawing,
intaglio printmaking & photography. After graduation Stevie
apprenticed with Austin copper artist, Daryl Colburn for 18 months
were she learned & fell in love with copper. She says the minute she
touched copper everything changed. Stevie’s art expresses itself in
the copper that she fashions into pieces that join her vision.
“Copper
is so malleable, its patinas are breathtaking and it is very
accessible.” Her vision? God and how He reveals himself in nature,
relationships, holiness, & the idea of the sacred. Her spiritual
experiences infuse her art, allowing her to turn a sheet of copper
into a three dimensional work of art. Her favorite part of creating,
she says, is when she realizes her art is finding its own shape. “A
lot of humility is involved”, she says as she quotes a favorite
writer Thomas Merton, “I cannot be humble unless I first know that
what is good in me is not my own”. Stevie’s pieces are organic &
astonishing. She still draws the pieces she creates, turning a two
dimensional idea into a piece of sculpture. Stevie is quite
prolific, working her craft nearly every day & her artwork has
created quite a following. Her art is currently on display at
Artisans at Rocky Hill in Fredericksburg, TX.
